As the air grows cooler and our beauty routines shift to reflect emerging fall trends, the world of hair color presents a welcome opportunity to switch up your look with cashmere blonde. This chic shade, most recently seen on the likes of Gigi Hadid, Kate Moss, and Alessandra Ambrosio, captures the essence of autumn leaves filtering light through the trees by illuminating the face with warm, creamy undertones. Instead of being a single-process, all-over dye job, cashmere blonde is achieved by strategically highlighting the hair in a way that resembles the delicate and luxurious woven nature of cashmere. It’s giving us all the cozy vibes we’ve been craving and more.

What Is Cashmere Blonde?

While blonde is arguably most popular during the summer months, the shade is getting a rebrand going into fall. Blending warm and cool tones like ash, honey, caramel, and beige, cashmere blonde comes off rich yet effortlessly so, with melty, consistent strands rather than segmented placement. Its subtle tones offer a more sophisticated and understated look compared to brighter blondes.

“Cashmere blonde is achieved by weaving low and fine highlights into the hair, creating a seamless blend that offers a nuanced dimension of tonal color,” says senior colorist at Sally Hershberger Salon—and hairstylist to Gigi Hadid—Keith Shore, “Instead of bright streaks, think of a tone-on-tone effect with subtle highs and lows.”

The best part, according to Shore, is that keeping up cashmere blonde is “lower maintenance” since as the client’s natural color grows out, the highlights meld with the regrowth rather than standing out in stark contrast.

How to Get the Look

Before you visit the salon, do some prep work to determine what shade may be right for you. "This trend is highly versatile and can be adapted for everyone, with options for lighter or darker tones based on the client’s base color," Shore says.

He recommends talking to your stylist about which fall tones will look best for your natural hair tone. If you want to get the cashmere blonde look, Shore recommends seeking "a more low-maintenance solution to hair color" and speaking to your colorist to keep the grow out "less rooty and more nuanced."

“The key to achieving cashmere blonde is in the application and adding in warm tones through lowlights and glosses,” he continues, “It’s also crucial to incorporate finer highlights that illuminate the color rather than overpowering it.” In short, ask for a soft, multi-tonal look blended with warm and cool tones, implemented with fine highlights, lowlights, and glosses.

Cashmere blonde is coveted for its low-maintenance nature. However, proper care is still necessary to preserve the look’s beauty and your overall hair health. Shore recommends utilizing color-safe shampoos to maintain the integrity of the color during at-home washing. Like any hair color, cashmere blonde can cause dryness and damage, so it’s essential to keep your hair well-nourished. Incorporating a deep conditioner into your routine for weekly use (or as recommended) can significantly improve the health of your strands. And, since colored strands can be more fragile, be sure to use a good heat protectant before styling.
